What a few weeks it has been for those who have been hit by hurricane Jose and then hurricane Maria. The storms battered the Caribbean and Florida leaving homes destroyed and people with nothing.
Puerto Rico came out of Jose in better shape than most islands in the Caribbean, but Maria destroyed the island, it’s structures and the lives of it’s people. The images released are devastating.
During our time at the NPRRA conference Puerto Rico had been often a topic discussed, as Puerto Rico was the scheduled location for next year’s meeting, but more importantly the devastation was on our mind. With so many out of power, left homeless and with nothing at all, it’s an important time to help put the people of Puerto Rico. We have recently donated to the Hand In Hand hurricane relief fund, which gives proceeds to organizations such as Direct Relief and Habitat for Humanity.
In addition to the many charities out there, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony announced yesterday their creation of the organization Somos Una Voz” (or We Are One Voice) a relief organization to bring supply and means of communication to those affected by natural disasters including Puerto Rico, but also Mexico, after their horrific earthquakes. You can donate to the fund at the Somos Una Voz website.
Our final words to those suffering in Puerto Rico are the same as those of Marc Anthony on his social media yesterday. “Don’t lose faith…In moments like this, it’s easy to feel alone, you’re not. We are on our way.” Our hearts go out to Puerto Rico and Mexico at this time. We’re sending our love.
Please help in any way you can whether it’s sending gently used clothes to your local library or making donations to relief funds. Puerto Rico came to the need of the people of Texas during Hurricane Harvey and it’s our turn to do the same for them.
